At the end of a narrow alley off Ha'atzmaut Square in Netanya, there is a place that time forgot - and that is exactly what makes it special. Uranus Pub opened in 1981, though the sign says 1980. "To confuse the enemy," the owner once said. It is one of the oldest pubs in Israel, not just in Netanya, and almost nothing inside has changed since opening day.
The pub was founded by Yochi Abramov, who had previously run the "Azazel" club and "HaMeyasdim" pub - two nightlife landmarks in Netanya. Yochi built Uranus as a classic English pub - heavy wood furniture, sawdust on the floors, and an atmosphere that feels like it was shipped straight from London. On the storefront, a hand-painted star chart marks the exact date and time the pub was born - under the sign of Aquarius, ruled by the planet Uranus.
Over the years, this place has hosted legends. Aviv Gefen sat here as a small child on the lap of his father, the writer Yonatan Gefen, who dedicated an entire column in the Maariv newspaper to the pub. Maccabi Netanya football players were regulars during the club's golden years, and comedians Eli and Mariano were part of the scenery.
Over the years the pub kept being there for you, through the happy moments, the exciting ones, and the not-so-beautiful times too. Uranus grew up and mellowed alongside its regulars, while always welcoming new faces with open arms - people with many experiences still ahead of them at the pub. And so Uranus became the kind of place where it is perfectly normal to see an 18-year-old celebrating the night before his army draft sitting right next to a thirty-year parliament of regulars who never skip their end-of-day beer.
